Embracing Age Diversity in the Workplace

The workforce is constantly evolving, and as people live longer and retire later, the number of older people in the workforce is growing. At Viewber, we have recently signed the Age Friendly Employers Pledge, committing to creating an age-friendly workplace that values and supports our older team members.

To date, the success of our start-up/scale-up has been directly attributed to our 4G (Four-Generation) workforce, providing us with diverse perspectives and experiences. We recognise that managing a diverse team can be complex, especially as a remote-first organisation. Still, we firmly believe that the benefits of embracing diversity and inclusion, including age diversity, far outweigh any difficulties. Research has shown that older people possess invaluable problem-solving and decision-making skills, as well as a wealth of experience and knowledge that can enrich any business.

Viewber is also very proud of the opportunities we offer to self-employed individuals to become Viewber Members. We believe that the gig economy model is well-suited to older people, and many of our Viewber Members are 50 or over.

Why is the gig economy ideal for older people?

Firstly, it allows for greater flexibility in terms of when and where work is done. This is particularly attractive to older people, who may be looking for more control over their work-life balance. All Viewber Members can choose to accept or reject appointments, allowing them to balance work with other commitments such as caring for family members or pursuing hobbies and interests.

In addition, the gig economy provides an opportunity for older people to leverage their years of experience and knowledge. Many have developed a wealth of skills and expertise over the course of their careers, and gig economy work allows them to put these skills to use on a freelance basis. This can be particularly attractive to those who may be looking to transition to retirement but still want to continue working in some capacity.

The gig economy also provides opportunities for older people to stay connected to the workforce and to continue learning and growing professionally. By taking on a variety of different gigs, they can develop new skills and stay up to date with the latest trends and developments. This can help to enhance their employability if they decide to return to more traditional forms of employment in the future.

Finally, the gig economy can offer financial benefits too. Many older people may be looking to supplement their retirement income or save for their retirement. By taking on freelance work, they can earn additional income while still maintaining the flexibility and control they desire.
